The Possibility of Evil

"She had been writing her letters--sometimes two or three everyday for a week, sometimes no more than one in a month--for the past year. She never got any answers, of course, because she never signed her name. If she had been asked, she would have sad that her name, Adela Strangeworth, a name honored in the town for so many years, did not belong on such trash"(68).

  1. Miss Strangeworth might think and say that she's writing these letters for the people in her town for a good cause and to ward off evil, but I think that deep down, she knows that it's not right. The only reason people would hide something is because they know that what they're doing is wrong and that they would be condemned and hated for it. Obviously, Miss Strangeworth knows, too, that if she was ever found out, she would be in big trouble. That is why she is so careful not to let anyone see her with the letters, or have other people, besides children, see her mailing them in the dark. I think that Miss. Strangeworth may seem prim, proper, esteemed, respected, and dignified to everyone on the outside, but she has a rotten core.
