Contents of the Dead Man's Pockets

"It was impossible to walk back. He simply could not do it. He couldn't bring himself to make the slightest movement. The strength was gone from his legs; his shivering hands--numb, cold, and desperately rigid--had lost all deftness; his easy ability to move and balance was gone. Within a step or two, if he tried to move, he knew that he would stumble and fall."

I chose this quotation and talk about how it foreshadowed about something bad will possibly happen to the man later on throughout the story. He said that he knew he would fall if he tried to move, and the title was "the contents of the dead man's pockets", hinting that someone might die in the story and while I was reading this story, I thought that he would fall and die at that time since it would be impossible that he doesn't move but successfully get back into the house, especially how Clare had just left the house 8 minutes ago and would be back earliest in 4 hours.

  1. From the quote, there are a couple parts where it foreshadows whats going to happen in the story. Such as, "had lost all deftness; his easy ability to move and balance was gone." It foreshadows that he might die because of his circumstances. Also due to the story's title, it would make the reader think about the person that's going to or might die in the story.

  2. Connection: For basketball team practice, we were required to climb the convoluted, upswept stairs at the foot of 18 Peaks Mountains. I was exhausted, yet I had to keep climbing since I couldn't simply give up. However, my muscles were sore and it was impossible to reach the finish line. I empathized Tom's plight since I understood the feeling of realizing that the finish line was so faraway that I couldn't succeed.
Inference: Tom would give up since he lost his strength and his apartment seemed so faraway.
Foreshadowing: "The strength was gone from his legs" and "his easy ability to move and balance was gone" showed that fatigue and fear rushed through Tom, in which Tom might give up and even die since he lost his confidence of succeeding and surviving.
