"He turned to pull the door closed and the warm air from the hall rushed through the narrow opening again. As he saw the yellow paper, the pencil flying, scooped off the desk and, unimpeded by the glassless window, sail out into the night and out of his life, Tom Benecke burst into laughter and then closed the door behind him."( Contents of the Dead Man's Pocket)
I infer the following scene: Tom rushed into the movie theater where his wife was sitting and plotted himself next to her. He then would tell his surprised wife how much he loved her. He would later come to appreciate his wife more and spend more time with her.
ReplyDeleteForeshadowing: There isn't a foreshadowing element in this quotation, it being the concluding sentence.
Connection: In the infamous movie- " A Beautiful Mind" John Nash appeared to have lost everything after being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. His wife, however, was the only thing he did not loose. Their love for each other is eternal and insurmountable. In the contents of the dead man's pockets, Tom didn't realize how important his wife was to him until he was balancing on the verge of death, John Nash had a similar realization of how much his wife meant to him when he danced on the wings of reality.
I chose the same quotation as Alyssa did because this quotation contains a literary term of allusion. The quotation implied Tom's death by describing the things that probably weren't happened in the reality; like "the pencil flying, scooped of the desk and, unimpeded by the glassless window." Of course the pencil wouldn't fly nor scoop off the desk, it is clear that the author is using these to imply the other world of dead or the momentary recovery before Tom's death. The last sentence said that Tom closed the door behind him could also be the idea of the ending of his life.
ReplyDeleteI also chose this quotation because I think it really shows how he has changed after his life-threatening incident out on the ledge of his apartment, 11 stories above the streets below. It repeats what happened to him at the very beginning of the story, but instead of going after the paper again, like he did before, he simply laughed and closed the door without even hesitating once to save his work. It really shows how much he has changed in merely ten minutes, and how much more he values, cherishes, and appreciates what he has in life. I think the last part, where Tom closes the door, symbolizes himself turning his back on his old life, his old self, and embracing what his new life and enjoying every moment of it so that when he dies he wont have any regrets.
