Debate: Doing Nothing is Nothing

Please comment with a short paragraph which contains a piece of factual support, an emotional appeal, and an appeal to ethics.

  1. There have been countless arguments of students and adults needing enough time to rest. Contrary to popular belief, the cause of such limited time is often not in the amount of workload, but rather, the key lies in productivity and efficiency. If students don't get enough work, they will never learn the true value of time and management. Children who are not accustomed to pressure since a young age cannot naturally and instinctively adapt to pressure in their future work. On the other hand, students who are put under the pressure of work and classes will learn at a younger age how to manage their time. And with time and efficiency, comes more space for learning. Although some may argue that even children with a lot of workload still procrastinate, it is also important to understand that many of them learn to adjust themselves. It is what separates the strong from the weak.

    1. What we are talking about is how doing nothing is NOTHING, not how to squeeze time out or acquire pressure. A bit off topic.

  2. It's human nature to be lazy. Ask yourselves, every time when you're given free time to do something meaningful, like thinking, have you ever used them wisely or just sitting watching TVs or playing computer games? Most of people will agree with the second one. Once students are given more free time to do nothing, they will actually do "nothing", or, do something meaningless. It is reasonable that why schools and parents want their kids to have a lot of activities, simply they just care about the children don't want them to waste their time. Besides, just like Kara said, the heavy work can help the students learning how to manage their time and do an excellent job in the limited time.

  3. Daydream, or in other words, loafing, is indeed a really enjoyable activity. However, the society we're facing nowadays is that we have to work work work. We have to use every single second we have and learn due to the fact that that's what most students are doing now, well at least Asian students. In this competitive environment, the only way we can success and stand out is to work hard, and learn as much as possible with the limited time you have. When you have the time and you choose to do nothing, it's not going to benefit you much at all if you want to be successful in the future. What we are facing right now is a world in which the strong lives, and the weak dies. Doing nothing ain't gonna make you strong.
