"She took The Gleaners out of its frame and looked at the picture one last time. She wondered why she had let it hang in the kitchen for so long. It bothered her, the way those peasants were forever bent over above that endless field of wheat. 'Look up!' she wanted to say to them. 'Look up, look up!' The Gleaners, she decided, would have to go. She set the picture outside with the garbage" (248).
Mood - The character is sympathetic because the people in The Gleaners are tired, poor, and treated badly. She is probably also poor and has back pain. The woman is also angry at the gleaners for not responding.
ReplyDeleteText-to-self - Brian has thrown away many books he liked because he had too many. He changed his view towards the books he used to like because they made his room too crowded, just like the woman in the passage changed her mind about the painting.
ReplyDeleteBrandon broke his bike and threw it away. Something he appreciated became something he did not appreciate. He changed his view of it, just as the woman changed her view of the painting.
Symbolism - The Gleaners symbolize something the character does that is low-status. She is trying to throw it away (since the painting has a prominent place in the kitchen) to get it out of her life.
ReplyDeleteCharacter - The character is sympathetic and a little angry at herself. She has gone threw some major changes throughout the story and now maybe regrets something that happened earlier when she was less knowledgeable.
ReplyDeleteStyle - The mood of the character was first confused, then wondering, then mad at the painting. The style is casual and capricious (because of the changing moods and quick pace of the story).
ReplyDeleteIt show submission and that bothers her because she felt like that and that is why she drink wine
